Where to Ride in Florida

When purchasing a pit bike, it is usually all assembled – minus the pedals. This is something you can do yourself in just six easy steps and with only one tool, a pedal wrench or 15 millimeter wrench.

Step One: After removing all parts from the packaging, set the bike upside down on its handles and seat in the “ready to work” position.

Step Two: Find the drive side pedal, marked with the letter “R” or with clockwise threading, and lace it through the crank pedal-hole.

Step Three: Locate the non-drive side pedal and thread it into the pedal-hole in a counter-clockwise motion.

Step Four: Use your pedal wrench or 15 millimeter wrench on the drive side pedal and turn in the counter-clockwise direction to tighten into the crank.

Step Five: Use the same tool and tighten the non-drive side pedal spindle with a clockwise motion.

Step Six: Test your pit bike on an easy ride to ensure your pedals are properly tightened. If it feels right to you, start riding!

1. Always wear a helmet and other protective gear that is fitted properly.

2. Never ride on public roads; another vehicle could hit you. The vehicles aren’t street legal.

3. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

4. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider vehicle, especially not a small child on the front.

5. Ride an ATV that’s right for your age.

6. Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys. They don’t provide healthy exercise and pose great danger.

7. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed. Private property owners have a right to forbid access. The ATV and property owners are responsible.

8. Take an ATV Rider-Course; call toll-free at 800-887-2887 or go to www.atvsafety.org to register. An online e-course can be taken at www.atvsafety.org.

Yesterday the new law went into effect which makes it mandatory for all ATV and UTV (this includes youth ATVs and UTVs too) vehicles in Ohio to be registered and display a license plate. Just because your ATV is registered doesn’t allow you to legally drive it on the road. You can still get a ticket for operating one on a highway or street. I imagine this type of law will spread nationwide.

The registration will be $34.50 per ATV.

It is reported that 500 employees will be loosing their jobs once the plant closes and as you can imagine, many Americans are not happy to hear that a new plant will be opening in Mexico. I am not against foreign made parts (obviously) but Polaris used the marketing strategy of “Made in America” for it’s Victory Motorcycle campaign. Will they now advertise their products as being “Partially Made in America”?

It was unclear which new plant will be manufacturing their adult and youth ATV engines.

Your child should absolutely be riding an ATV made for children. Why? Because most children under 16 are not big enough to comfortably ride an adult sized ATV. It is imperative that your child can easily reach the handle bars and ground for optimal control of the vehicle. Control is the key word here. If your son or daughter can not properly reach the controls, they can not properly control the ATV and are in danger of having an accident.

Youth ATVs have lower ccs and are not able to reach the speeds of an larger adult ATV. Mixing increased speed and increased weight with a rider who is not able to have proper control of the ATV because their size simply wont allow it, can be an accident waiting to happen.

Here are some safety tips from ATVSafety.Gov

• Take a hands-on safety training course
• Always wear protective gear – especially a helmet – when riding ATVs.
• Do not drive ATVs with a passenger or ride as a passenger.
• Do not drive ATVs on paved roads.
• Do not permit children to drive or ride adult ATVs.
• Do not drive ATVs while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

One last thing, different types of activities require different types of helmets. When riding ATVs, UTVs or Pit Bikes make sure your helmet is appropriate for these types of vehicles. You wouldn’t receive the same type of protection from a skateboard helmet as you would for a helmet specifically designed for riding an ATV. Also, make sure the helmet fits properly, especially when fitting your youth ATV rider.

For the last 4 years an unknown individual(s) have been setting these “traps”. Police have received complaints about the noise that the ATVs and pit bikes make from certain homes near the trail.

The trail is approved for use by ATVs and pit bikes and any other activity. Devices like the one found Sunday could affect anyone.

“A jogger could drive one of these spikes right through their foot and have a life-long disability because of it,”. “If a horse steps on it (that) could affect the animal but also (the rider) who could be thrown and you could be talking a broken neck.”

I can’t believe someone could do this. Hopefully they will be caught soon-before someone gets hurt.

A Houston couple has been using bogus Driver’s Licenses to open a line of credit and purchase ATVs! They hit one dealer for over $17,000 and attempted to try it again at another local ATV dealership. The second dealership requested another form of ID and the two suspects took off. Stealing ATVs, UTVs and Pit Bikes (new and used) seems to be a trend these days.
